25 outstanding students receive scholarships totaling $100,000

BURLINGAME, CA (PRWEB) August 13, 2010 —The Kim and Harold Louie Family Foundation announced today that it has granted scholarships totaling $100,000 to 25 outstanding high school seniors throughout the United States.  This year, the Foundation received a record number of applications from high school seniors all over the United States.  Applicants included valedictorians, student leaders, athletes, recent immigrants, and children of United States veterans, many of whom will be the first in their families to attend college.  Choosing scholarship recipients this year was very difficult, and made more so because of the increased demonstrated needs attributable primarily to the economic and financial hardships currently facing many Americans.

“We believe each of our 2010 Louie Scholars represents someone who has demonstrated great potential to continue to make a significant impact in their communities and the world at large.  As in past years, our 2010 Louie Scholars come from both genders and diverse backgrounds and economic circumstances, and hail from all over the country,” said Betty B. Louie, The Kim and Harold Louie Family Foundation’s Founder and Chair of the Board of Directors. “Our scholars are chosen for their outstanding academic record, demonstrated maturity, work ethic, community service and financial need.  Extra consideration was given to the children of United States veterans and students with special needs.”

LONG BEACH, CA— With the national unemployment rate for veterans with severe disabilities at 85 percent, a unique Long Beach program aims to make a difference, helping those who wore the uniform and were seriously injured, get good jobs and careers in a tough economy.

Officially opening on December 2, the Long Beach Paralyzed Veterans of America Vocational Rehabilitation Office will empower veterans with disabilities with the services and tools they need to reintegrate into the job market—while matching them with businesses and organizations with career positions.

Join Paralyzed Veterans of America’s National Vice President Al Kovach and former U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs, the Honorable Anthony Principi, who now serves as QTC’s Executive Chairman, and Betty B. Louie, President of The Kim and Harold Louie Family Foundation for the launch of this important initiative. Speakers will include VA officials, local business leaders, paralyzed veterans who have secured good jobs through the program’s existing offices around the nation, and veterans with disabilities from the Southern California area who are already enrolled in the Long Beach program.

The office, part of an emerging network, is based at the Long Beach VA Medical Center. It is being established through an innovative public-private partnership between Paralyzed Veterans of America, The Kim and Harold Louie Family Foundation, QTC Management, Inc., and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

32 outstanding students receive scholarships totaling $100,000

This year, the Foundation received a record number of applications, more than twice the number from the previous year. The Foundation granted scholarship awards to less than 9% of the applicants. Applicants included valedictorians, student leaders, recent immigrants, many of whom will be the first in their families to attend college, and others who have overcome great adversity. it has granted scholarships totaling $100,000 to 25 outstanding high school seniors and college students
throughout the United States. The largest individual award for $10,000 went to David Phillips, Lompoc, CA.
David, 18, will be attending Pepperdine University in the fall and plans to major in Pre-Law. Twelve other
students were awarded $5,000 each. The remaining students received scholarships totaling $30,000.

Thuy Nguyen. Allison, 18, will be attending the University of California at Davis in the fall and plans to major in
Life Science. Thuy, 17, will be attending Stanford University in the fall and plans to major in the Biological
Sciences. Seven other students were awarded $5,000 each. Twenty-two other students received scholarships
totaling $45,000.
